Breitling and Aston Martin: A High-Speed Reunion Through Formula One Racing

As pioneers in collaborations between watches and automobiles, Breitling and Aston Martin have joined forces again to establish a new long-term global partnership. At the heart of this collaboration is Breitling's return to F1 racing and the launch of a new Navitimer watch, inspired by racing tradition and incorporating advanced materials and superior performance.

If you've been following the revival of the luxury watch industry since the beginning of this century, you'll remember that Breitling was the first watch brand to establish a long-term partnership with a luxury car manufacturer, signing a cooperation agreement with Bentley in 2002.

While Girard-Perregaux did partner with Ferrari as early as 1993, it was Breitling's collaboration with Bentley that ignited the trend of collaborations between automobiles and watches in the early 21st century. In 2004 alone, Jaeger-LeCoultre signed a deal with Aston Martin, Audemars Piguet with Maserati, and Parmigiani Fleurier with Bugatti; while the following year, Panerai's five-year cooperation agreement with Ferrari was unsuccessful. High-end car brands and luxury watch brands have been courting each other ever since, but no partnership has lasted as long as Breitling and Bentley's initial collaboration, which spanned nearly 20 years and only ended in 2021.

From Bentley to Bond: Two Decades of Auto Union

This is undoubtedly good news for Breitling: it has reached a new automotive partnership agreement with Aston Martin. As mentioned earlier, Aston Martin previously collaborated with Jaeger-LeCoultre, but that partnership gradually ended in 2016. Since then, the James Bond favorite car manufacturer has frequently collaborated with numerous watch brands, a number comparable to the number of female companions a 007 might have in a single film. After parting ways with Jaeger-LeCoultre, Aston Martin briefly collaborated with Richard Mille, TAG Heuer, and most recently Girard-Perregaux—if you don't count the announcement of its continued partnership with Timex at the end of last year. However, Timex's collaboration with Breitling was merely a licensing agreement, while the newly announced partnership represents a much closer and more significant "partnership," which Breitling describes as a "global" and "multi-year" collaboration.

With Breitling's return to Formula 1, the Navitimer watch has also returned to the track.

To launch this timepiece, Breitling and Aston Martin jointly released the "Navitimer B01 Aramco Formula One Team" chronograph. According to the watchmaker, this watch marks Breitling's "return to F1," as Grand Prix drivers such as Graham Hill and Jim Clark wore Navitimer watches back in the 1960s.

This watch joins an increasingly crowded list of watchmaker/F1 team collaborations, including IWC and Mercedes-AMG Petronas, TAG Heuer and Oracle Red Bull Racing, H. Moser and Alpine, Richard Mille and Ferrari, and Tudor and Racing Bulls.

To commemorate Aston Martin's debut in Formula 1 with the DBR4/250 race car, the new Navitimer watch is a limited edition of 1959 pieces. The timepiece features a titanium case, a carbon fiber dial, and a strap inspired by F1 drivers' seatbelts. Dial details are accented with Aston Martin's signature "racing green" and a vibrant lime green, while the first-ever combination of titanium and carbon fiber draws inspiration from the materials used in F1 cockpits.

Through the sapphire crystal case back, one can see the Breitling Manufacture Calibre 01 COSC-certified chronometer movement, equipped with a PVD black tungsten alloy rotor specially crafted for this watch, engraved with the Aston Martin F1 team logo.

The edge of the case back is engraved with the motto "One of 1959" and "The Driver's Tool."

As part of the agreement, starting with the public debut of the all-new AMR26 race car on February 9th, the Breitling logo will be prominently displayed on the Aston Martin Aramco race cars and team apparel.

Speaking on this new partnership, Breitling CEO George Cohen stated that the two brands are “connected by a century-long obsession with speed, precision engineering, and exceptional design,” and that the global reach of modern F1 means it offers the brand opportunities to reach new customers.

“The success of this relationship depends on how effectively it can be maintained,” Cohen said.

“Formula 1 is a global sport and a powerful media platform with enormous influence. While that exposure is important, direct engagement with customers and the community is even more crucial.” He also stated that this collaboration will allow Breitling to explore entirely new ways of watchmaking.

“For the new Navitimer B01 Chronograph 43 Aston Martin Formula 1 Team watch, we’ve introduced a lightweight titanium case for the first time, paired with a carbon fiber dial – a first for Navitimer as well.

The textured leather strap is inspired by F1 car seatbelts, another design element we’ve never attempted before. Collaborations like this allow us to expand our material and design language while maintaining Breitling’s consistent precision, performance, and craftsmanship.”

Although Aston Martin’s F1 team and sports car manufacturing division are now two separate entities, this partnership applies to both aspects of the brand. According to an Aston Martin spokesperson, a new Breitling watch inspired by road cars will be launched in the third quarter of this year.
